Shelters (Platanos)
Shelters (Platanos)
About 10 km northeast of Platanos settlement, following the Kamaros Anogeias district road, you can find old shelters on Psiloritis. These were used as cheese-making areas or as seasonal lodgings for shepherds. Like all architectures of this type, they are low buildings with small openings, built with dry stones without binding material on Psiloritis in perfect harmony with the stony landscape of the mountain. The most common ones were circular buildings, which were also more durable, but there were also rectangular ones. If you come here, it’s worth going inside to see the interior, designed exclusively with stone elements, such as the benches and cupboards, but also the impressive ceiling, built according to the exhortation system, reminiscent of the ancient Minoan tombs.
