Gourgouthoi

Gourgouthoi

Gourgouthoi is a small settlement in the center of the Amari Valley, surrounded by greenery. It is mainly abandoned today and has no permanent residents in recent years.

Before being abandoned at the end of the 20th century, the village was continuously inhabited for many centuries and in fact, its oldest mention is found in a Venetian document. However, the great hit that took from the Nazis during the Occupation gradually led to its desolation. The Germans looted and burnt the village and then executed the local men. Although there were reconstruction efforts, the village didn’t manage to recover.

The cemetery church dedicated to Agios Ioannis and Agia Anna is located a short distance from the village. The two-room church dates back to the 14th century and today only a few fresco fragments are preserved inside.
