Caves of Hampathura and Leska (Fourfouras)
Caves of Hampathura and Leska (Fourfouras)
There are two caves above the settlement of Fourfouras on the steep slopes of Psiloritis, Leska at an altitude of 1390 m and Hampathura at an altitude of 1460 m. Leska is quite difficult to reach, as it is formed on the cliff, but it is of particular interest for the decoration that has on the inside, but also for its multiple rooms, which were formerly used by cheesemakers as areas for ripening cheese. To explore it, basic caving equipment, experience, and a lack of fear of heights are required when approaching the entrance.
Hampathura is a smaller cave, with a main room, above which a small cellar has been built so that it can be used directly for ripening the cheeses.
