The impressive, verdant gorge of Patsos is located in the northwestern part of the municipality of Amari. It is a beautiful gorge crossed by a small river. Its length reaches 2 kilometers while crossing it will take a total of 2 hours on the way back. The altitude difference between its highest point and the entrance reaches 240 meters. The canyon has been exploited by the forest service. You will find landscaped rest areas inside as well as a bird observatory. The huge plane trees and the wild vegetation that grows there, its high walls, but also the small church of Agios Antonios, which is built in the recess of a large cave, are impressive. The altar of the open-air sanctuary in which in ancient times Cranial Mercury, protector of shepherds, forests, and nature’s fertility, was worshipped, used to be next to the temple. Religious worship continues nowadays in honor of Saint Anthony, which is why you will see there many tributes to the Saint.
