Above the village of Voliones, on the eastern side of the Veni hill, the cavernous Church of Agios Anthony – a share of the Arkadi Monastery – is preserved. The remains of the cells documenting the presence of monks in previous periods are preserved around the church. You can get there by following either a dirt-concrete road that starts from the village of Voliones, or a path that passes by a green route with a wonderful view.
An ossuary with skulls of the monks has been placed inside the Temple, which is carved into the rock. Also, scattered pottery sherds dating to the Minoan, Classical and Hellenistic eras have been identified in the same cave, demonstrating its centuries-long use as a place of worship. The first known written testimony comes from a Venetian document (notary deed) of 1627.
