Amari Municipality
It belongs to the Region of Crete and administratively falls under the Regional Unit of Rethymnon. It was established on January 1, 2011, in accordance with Law 3852/2010 on “New Architecture of Self-Government and Decentralized Administration – Kallikratis Program” and resulted from the merger of the pre-existing Municipalities of Syvritos and Kouriton. It spreads in the center of the prefecture of Rethymnon, occupying an area of 278.85 square kilometers and borders to the north with the Municipalities of Rethymnon and Mylopotamos, while to the south with the Municipalities of Phaistos and Agios Vassilios. The seat of the Municipality is Agia Fotini, while the historical seat is Fourfouras. According to the data of the latest ELSTAT census (2021), the permanent population of Amari amounts to 5,607 permanent residents.
How to get to Amari
The Municipality of Amari is about 35 km south of the city of Rethymnon and is located on the border with the Regional Unit of Heraklion. It borders to the north with the Municipalities of Rethymnon and Mylopotamos, while to the south with the Municipalities of Phaistos and Agios Vassilios.
You can come to the villages of Amari by a private car, alternatively you have the possibility to use long-distance transport (KTEL), as there are direct routes from the city of Rethymno.
