Margeles Cave (Helenes)

Margeles Cave (Helenes)

It is located northeast of the village of Elenes, very close to the traditional springs of the village. Its entrance is formed on a small plateau, it is narrow and low with a southwest orientation and a view toward Mount Kentros. In its greater part, the cave consists of a long and tubular descending corridor, which develops in steps at different levels. Some points are even so narrow that their access is impossible. The minimal stalagmite decoration preserved inside is looted, while only a small part at the end remains active (liquid).

It is also worth noting that the Margele Cave is at the same time an important site of a Minoan settlement. Excavations here have brought to light stone flails and pottery dating from the late Neolithic period (ca. 3300-3000 BC). Archaeological data also demonstrate the use of the area throughout the Minoan period and also during the Greco-Roman period.
