Holy Church of Agios Georgios Xififoros (Apodoulou)
Holy Church of Agios Georgios Xififoros (Apodoulou)
The single-aisled, arched church of Agios Georgios Xififoros is located in a rural location north of the Apodoulou village. The northern and eastern walls with the sanctuary’s arch are preserved from the previous temple that existed in the same location. Another single-room aisle was added to the south later on, which collapsed. From the second aisle, the north wall with three pointed, blind arches was saved.
The decoration is attributed to a folk painter during the middle of the 14th century, who knew particularly well the pictorial developments of Paleologian art. The same artist is responsible for the decoration of the churches of Panagia in Smiles village and Panagia in Rousospiti village.
