Holy Monastery of Kaloidena
Holy Monastery of Kaloidena
The Monastery of Kaloidena (or Metamorphosis of the Savior), is situated in a green landscape with plane trees and springs, with a wonderful view of Fourfouras in the village of Ano Meros.
Based on the frescoes of the temple, the Monastery was founded between the 13th and 14th century. It continued to operate during the Turkish occupation and was helped by the large Varouhas family. However, during the years of the Greek Revolution, in October 1823, the Turks destroyed the monastery along with others in the area, because they were helping Chainides and the monks of Kaloidena participated in the armed struggle. From then until today, the Monastery remains deserted and abandoned.
In 1992, after the collapse of the dome of the church, it was decided to restore the church, which was completed in 2001, preserving the form of the original building.
